Read the story
It had been a long day of teaching by the lake. When evening came, Jesus said to His friends, “Let’s go over to the other side,” so they got into the boat and pushed off from the shore.
Jesus was tired. He lay down at the back of the boat, put His head on a cushion, and fell asleep.
Then the wind came. It swept down over the water and whipped it into waves, and the waves broke over the sides of the little boat until it began to fill with water. Some of these men were fishermen who had spent their whole lives on this lake, and even they were frightened.
They shook Him awake. “Teacher, don’t you care that we are going to drown?”
Jesus stood up in the rocking boat. He spoke to the wind and He said to the sea, “Peace. Be still.”
“He arose, and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ The wind ceased, and there was a great calm.”
Mark 4:39
And just like that it was over. The wind stopped. The water went flat and quiet. The only sound was the boat creaking and the men breathing.
Then Jesus asked them gently, “Why are you so afraid?”
The same voice that made the sea was in the boat with them the whole time. It is with us too, in whatever storm we are in tonight.
What we learn
When we feel afraid, we can remember that Jesus is with us. We can trust Him even during the storms in our lives.
Family prayer
Dear Jesus, thank You for always being with us. When we feel scared or worried, help us remember that You are near and help us trust You. Amen.
A verse to remember
He awoke, and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
Mark 4:39
Say it together a few times, then see who can say it alone.
Read it in the Bible: Mark 4:35–41.
