There was a time when no rain fell at all. The ground cracked, the grass turned brown, and the crops did not grow. God told His prophet Elijah to go and hide by a small brook called Cherith, east of the Jordan river.
“Drink from the brook,” God said, “and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”
Ravens are not the birds anyone would choose. They are big and black and noisy, and they usually take food rather than bring it. But Elijah went where God told him to go, and he sat down by the water and waited.
In the morning the ravens came, with bread and meat in their beaks, and they set it down for him. In the evening they came again. Morning and evening, day after day, while the land stayed dry and everybody else wondered where their next meal would come from.
“The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook.”
1 Kings 17:6
Elijah did not have a store cupboard. He had no field and no market. What he had was a promise, and every single day the promise arrived on black wings.
God sees us. God loves us. And sometimes He provides in ways nobody would ever have guessed.
What we learn
God sees us, loves us, and can provide in surprising ways.
Family prayer
Dear God, thank You for taking care of us every day. Help us trust You when we feel worried or alone. Amen.
A verse to remember
You shall drink from the brook. I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.
