Read the story

A great crowd came out to find Jesus that day. People walked from villages all around, carrying their children, helping their grandparents along the road, because they wanted to hear Him and because many of them needed to be healed. By the afternoon there were about five thousand men there, and women and children besides.

The sun began to go down. The disciples started to worry. “It is getting late,” they said, “and there is nothing to eat out here. There isn’t enough food for all these people.”

Then a little boy came forward. In his hands he had his own supper: five small loaves of bread and two fish. “It’s not much,” he said, “but you can have it.”

Jesus took the loaves and the fish, looked up to heaven, and thanked God for them.

“Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to those who were sitting down.”

John 6:11

Then He told the disciples to start handing the food out. So they did. They passed bread along the rows of people sitting on the grass, and fish too, and the baskets did not run out. They kept giving and there was always more, until every single person there had eaten as much as they wanted.

When everyone was full, Jesus told them to gather up what was left, so that nothing would be wasted. They filled twelve baskets with the leftovers, more at the end than they had at the beginning.

It started with one child’s lunch, given away.

What we learn

Jesus cares about our needs. What we give to God matters, and Jesus can do great things with little.

Family prayer

Dear Jesus, thank You for caring for us. Help us to trust You, even when we don't have enough. Show us how to share what we have and use it for Your glory. Amen.

A verse to remember

Jesus took the loaves; and having given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to those who were sitting down.

John 6:11

Say it together a few times, then see who can say it alone.
