Moses led God’s people out of Egypt, and what a day that was. After years of slavery they were walking free, carrying their bundles, holding their children’s hands, full of hope. Then they came to the edge of the Red Sea, and they stopped. There was water in front of them as far as they could see.
Behind them, dust rose on the road. Pharaoh had changed his mind, and his army was coming with horses and chariots.
The people were frightened. “What will we do?” they said. “There is water in front of us and soldiers behind us.”
Moses stood where everybody could see him, and he said, “Do not be afraid. Stand still. God will fight for us.” Then God told Moses to lift up his staff over the water.
God sent a strong wind that blew all night. And the sea opened. A dry path appeared right through the middle, with tall walls of water standing on the left and on the right.
“Yahweh will fight for you, and you shall be still.”
Exodus 14:14
So they walked. Families, grandparents, children carrying lambs, donkeys loaded with everything they owned, all of them walking on dry ground with the sea standing up on both sides like glass.
When the last of them reached the other shore, they were safe. The water came back together behind them, and the danger was gone.
Then the people sang. They lifted their hands and thanked God, because He had made a way where there had been no way at all.
What we learn
God is with us when we are afraid, and He can make a way where there seems to be no way.
Family prayer
Dear God, thank You for being with us when we are afraid. Help us to be still, to trust You, and to remember that You can make a way. Amen.
