Why Are We Created in Different Colors?

This article started with a question from a child at home. One day she asked, “Why are we created in different colors?” Maybe something at school or on TV made her wonder. If you have ever wondered the same thing, this is for you.

Have you ever looked around and noticed that no two people look exactly the same?

Some friends have brown skin. Some have white skin, or black skin, or every beautiful shade in between. Some hair is curly, some is straight. Some eyes are brown, some are blue, some are green. Some families speak English at home, some speak French, and some speak languages you have never even heard before.

Have you ever wondered why?

God did not make just one kind of flower

Think about a garden.

A garden could have only one flower in it, all the exact same color and the exact same shape. It would still be a garden. But it would not be very exciting to look at.

Now think about a garden with red roses, yellow sunflowers, purple violets, and tiny white daisies, all growing together. Every flower is different. And that is exactly what makes the garden so beautiful.

God made people the same way He made that garden. On purpose.

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” — Genesis 1:27

Every single person you will ever meet is made in God’s image. Not just people who look like you. Everyone.

Different does not mean less

Sometimes people look at someone with different skin, or a different way of talking, and think that person is less important, or less loved. That is never true.

Your worth does not come from what color your skin is, or how your face looks, or what language you speak at home. Your worth comes from one simple fact: God made you, and God does not make mistakes.

“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” — Psalm 139:14

That verse is not only about you. It is about your friend with the different skin color too. And the boy down the street who talks with an accent. And the girl at school who wears something you have never seen before. Every one of you is fearfully and wonderfully made.

What really matters about a person

Here is something worth remembering: you cannot tell if someone is kind just by looking at their skin. You cannot tell if someone is brave, or funny, or a good friend, just by looking at their face.

You only find those things out by getting to know someone. By playing with them. By listening to them. By being their friend.

So the next time you wonder

The next time you notice that your friend looks different from you, here is your answer.

God did not create people in only one color. He made us different on purpose, and He loves every single one of us the same.

Different does not mean less. Different does not mean better. Different just means there are so many beautiful ways to be one of God’s children.
