Hold On to Hope

Some days a child has a thousand questions and no answers yet. This is a song for that day.

Six friends walk through the rain and sing their way back into the light. It is about the waiting: the prayers that do not turn to answers straight away, the tomorrow you cannot see, and the God who stays beside you in the meantime.

“But I don't need the whole tomorrow — I only need the next small step.”

Hold On to Hope lyrics

Verse

Some days I have a thousand questions
I don't know what tomorrow brings
Some days I try to look so certain
When I'm not certain of a thing
But I don't need the whole tomorrow
I only need the next small step
If God is walking here beside me
I haven't reached the ending yet

Pre-Chorus

I may not see the way
I may not understand
But even when I'm scared
I know whose hand I have

Chorus

Hold on to hope
Hold on, hold on
When you can't see past today
Hold on to hope
Hold on, hold on
Don't let your courage fade
God is with us in the waiting
We are never on our own

Children

Hold on, hold on
Hold on to hope

Bridge

Some prayers don't turn to answers
The moment that we say amen
Sometimes we wait and wonder
When the light will come again
But faith can live in the waiting

Why we wrote it

Most children's songs are about the moment the light comes. Fewer are about the hours before it. This one was written for those hours, for the child who prayed for something and is still waiting, and for the parent who does not know what to say about it.

It does not promise that every prayer is answered the way we hope. The pre-chorus says it plainly: I may not see the way, I may not understand, but even when I'm scared, I know whose hand I have. A child does not need a map. A child needs a hand to hold, and so do the rest of us.

That is why the four verses beside this page are the ones they are. The bridge carries the whole idea in a line a five year old can sing: some prayers don't turn to answers the moment that we say amen, but faith can live in the waiting.

If you have a child who is waiting for something right now, sing this one together, then read Psalm 27 out loud, all of it, and end on the last verse.
